Cultural/historical objectives

Our workshop has an ongoing interest in gilding methods used in different countries and cultures. In addition to aesthetic considerations, we are interested in the durability of gilding. We have studied the durability of gilding on exterior gilding sites (e.g., church domes and crosses) in collaboration with VTT.

The focus of our own research has been on the differences between eastern and western gilding, gilding recipes, working methods, as well as aesthetic and artistic aspects. We have sought more information on these for example in relevant international meetings, training courses, and seminars.

Master Gilder Raimo Snellman has received grants from the Finnish Cultural Foundation, Alfred Kordelin Foundation, and Majaoja Foundation for, e.g., studying abroad and exploring gilding methods.
